High School Teams racing
Team sailing involves racing in two handed dinghies, three boats per team. Races are short, around 10 to 15 minutes with the teams trying to achieve a winning combination of places (lowest scoring team wins). The sport is very popular as an introduction to sailing as many sailors are coached from beginner level with minimal costs to families.
Napier Boys and Girls High Schools, and Lindisfarne College participate in teams racing on a regular basis, and Taradale High School runs a sailing programme.
The Hawkes Bay Nautical Education Trust has nine 420 yachts which they make available to the schools to use for teams racing. These boats enable schools to train once or twice a week during the summer terms as well as enter team sailing competitions.
There are normally three regattas held for the teams, a Hawkes Bay Teams Racing Event before Christmas, a Regional Qualifying Event in Taupo in March, and the Nationals in April.
