Learn to Sail

HB Sail operates in conjunction with Napier Sailing Club to provide a range of learn to sail programs for all ages.  Group Learn to Sail programs are run during the summer season and private group or individual lessons can be arranged.   The focus is to provide a fun environment and ensure positive participation whilst learning safe sailing skills.

Junior Learn to Sail

Adult Learn to Sail

Optimist dinghies are used for junior learn to sail courses.  Courses are aimed for 7 -15 year olds.

Initially the focus is on confidence and boat handling but as the sailors confidence and skills grow the class offers opportunities for fleet racing.

When ready some ‘Learn to Race’ skills are acquired and offers sailors the opportunity to sail in local, national and international regattas.

Adult Learn to Sail courses are run using Elliot 6m yachts. This class of boat was designed by New Zealander, Greg Elliott, and used in the London 2012 Olympics women's match racing event.

The Elliott 6m vessels offer exciting performance on all points of sailing with a high degree of stability.  They are an ideal training and development yacht as the sail handling systems are well positioned.

Completing a Learn to Sail course provides keen sailors with opportunities to crew onboard club boats in local races and regattas, or move on to captaining their own boat.

Women's Learn to Sail

A Women's Learn to sail is run also in the Elliot 6m yacht.  This is a good introduction to sailing and then participating in the Women's Wednesday Evening series.

The focus is on enjoyment, whilst building confidence and skill in a 'safe' friendly environment.

No experience necessary!

Come a learn the basic principles of sailing and have some fun and laughs along the way.
